nina ulana art: Metropolis

This is "Metropolis," a fiberglass sculpture (molded by Cow Painters in Chicago) that I painted for the Oak Park Area Arts Council's Parade of Pigs and Pleasant Home Auction in Oak Park, IL. It was quite a project. "Metropolis" was part of our household for quite some time while being created, and at 3 feet high and approximately 5 feet in length, he was no small visitor! Artist Statement

Predominately working in acrylic on canvas, Nina also enjoys creating artwork in pastel. The creative process for her has always been a combination of conscious planning, yet subconscious direction in execution. Her work tends to have a narrative quality and is often figurative with strong themes in pattern and design. Nina uses color and line to balance compositions and accentuate movement. Her current series is titled “Dreamscapes.” This series, sometimes called “Mindscapes,” represents internal psyches in dimensional scapes; physically depicting the imagination and subconscious. The interaction between the viewer and the artwork is what makes art most meaningful to this artist.

Bio

Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Nina grew up in an artistic household which embraced the Ukrainian culture. She earned her B.A. from DePaul University, and has been doing freelance graphic art, exhibiting paintings, and creating commissioned art since 1993. Her professional career began in the non-profit arts sector, which included being a Technical Director/Scenic Designer for Jedlicka Performing Arts Center and co-producing a zine called “Blue Sugar; Sound Exposure for Artists and Authors.” She also worked for The Chicago Conservation Center and The Arts & Business Council of Chicago. In 1998, she entered the retail real estate industry, where she gained 25 years of experience, first at GGP, then at JLL. Nina has benefited from her creative background, and her proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and market research. Outside of her professional achievements, Nina enjoys reading and writing, and spending time with her family and two dogs.
